It's a luscious mix of words & tricks, with the odd mp3 thrown in for good measure.

you don't always mean to sleep out in the gutter -

sometimes that's just the most comfortable place.

oh my god, don't i know it.

i moved into college on the first of march. this i why i have not updated. because i have been drunk almost permanently for nearly two months.

there's too much crap to catch up on for me to relate much. plus it's all a bit of a blur. so i'll fill you in on some basics so that when i get back into regular updates (ha!) you'll know what i'm talking about.

my college is 130 years old, and the main building is this beautiful old sandstone thing full of mahogany and stained glass and chandeliers, and it looks like hogwarts. there are around 220 undergrad residents of whom a little under half are freshers, plus some postgrads and the staff (this includes a few tutors, admin staff, housekeeping, kitchen staff and groundsmen). my room is in the main building (there are a couple of other residential buildings), as is stuff like the dining hall and the Junior common room or JCR - the centre of much heavy drinking as well as slightly more sober student's club meetings etc. admin actually have relatively little to do with our day-to-day lives, the students' club runs most things. we are all members, and there is the senior student (captain woody!) and a secretary and treasurer, and reps and subcommittees for everything from every sporting team and the drama society, to the CS on the DF subcommittee (that's cut-sick on the dancefloor), the tip (touch footy) subcommittee and the home brew sub committee. minutes from committee meetings are a source of great amusement.
anyway, as i said my room is in the main building, in the front corridor actually. it's kind of good because people are always coming in to say hi on their way to the dining hall or JCR, it's very social, but on the other hand i get even less work done than i would have anyway. i also have to walk past the main entrance in my towel to get to the showers. there are three other girls and three boys in my stretch of corridor, and three more boys in an alcove round the corner. my closest neighbour is kane, who i refer to as keanu because he reminds me of him, and when the names are that close how can i not? he's a second-year pharmacy student, but it's his first year at college. (our entire floor is freshers actually, as are most of the students in Main. our little stretch of corridor is known as fresher alley. most of the seniors live in the newer building next to the oval, Reid.) on keanu's other side lives monty, an economics student with a loud mouth, a filthy sense of humour, a brother in second year and a heart of gold. love him. then there's jess, who's fairly quiet and doesn't socialise that much with the rest of us, but seems nice. further down that way in the alcove, there's howie, who's all young-liberal (i'll get started on the young liberals in a sec...tsssssssssssssss) and a little annoying; tim down the end, who's another quiet one but lovely enough; and in the middle, petey, one of my really good mates here already. did i mention i knew NOBODY when i came here? most people seemed to have somebody they knew, but there there no other girls in my grade who even came to sydney uni, and only one guy, piers, who went to college (he's over at the only all-boys one, i see him quite a bit) at all. pete was pretty much one of the first people i met, as my parents and i sat with him, his and a few of his mates at lunch on the first day. he's a bit of golden boy type, he took a gap year and so like a lot of freshers he actually finished school a year before me, but he's a total champ and has some awesome music on his puta. plus he gives great hugs.
on the other side of the main entrance, there's sandy, who's actually a second-year, but was voted eternal fr by the seniors. plus he acted up a bit too much in the first few weeks and college admin told him if he wanted to stay he had to move out of thyne (another residential building) and into main where they could keep an eye on him. he seems a bit rough at first but once i've gotten to know him a little he's actually a really nice, smart guy, and he's got awesome music as well. (like the cure's ENTIRE back catalogue.) then there's anna and zoe. they're both doing arts like me, only anna's doing arts/languages and zo's doing arts/sciences. anna started going out with another fresher guy, richard, about five days into o week, and they're still on. they're mental about each other, it's so cute.
i've got a few other mates too - cally, who lives in the alcove one floor up, is kind of in the clique too, she's from tasmania and is the craziest kid ever; pip, who's a little alternative but friendly as hell and is in one of my french tutes; ellen, who's in my other french tute and is a model with this quasi-west-london accent that makes her sound like a flaming queen stuck in kate moss's head, says stuff like "you know that ugly girl with the fat nose in our french tute?" and seems to only have models for friends outside college; andie, who actually came to our year 12 formal because she's from camden and is good friends with a guy from my year, and is possibly the nicest person alive (and not in a spineless way); and dana, who's a second year guy (yes, a boy called dana) who's originally from new york state. we showed up on thr first monday wearing identical shins tshirts - we'd been to the same show back in feb. we have almost identical taste in music and share it all the time - i've got him onto gelbison and some other aussie stuff, and he's got me onto some american indie bands like guster and dispatch who are awesome. he's also got me back into ben folds, and we went to see him a few weekends ago. oh my fucking god, best show i have EVER been to, it was just amazing. go and get the live album, that might convey a tiny fraction of how awesome it was. (i also went to see bright eyes the night after! that was fucking awesome too, i got conor's bottle of water afterwards!!! so proud. the title of this post is from a BE song called road to joy.)

i say all this stuff now i never used to say before! i never used to use the word cunt, i used to hate it, now i use it all the time (although i still object to its usage in an anaotmical sense). i also say "that's awesome" all the time, for which i think i can blame dana; and elle is always coming up with new random expressions like "ho yah, in a BIG way!". plus everyone here calls me cait, not by variations on my last name like most people did at school. when my school friends come to stay (which they do quite a bit, maddy is here at least once a week) they think it's the weirdest thing ever.

it's all very private-school - i suppose it would have to be, people who can afford college would have to be able to afford private schooling. the place is full of jocks and stunningly beautiful girls with tans and designer wardrobes, not to mention a few young-liberal types who dress like they're forty and think they're god's gift to women. (grrrrrrrrr. i really can't stand those three. they think that just because i wasn't exactly the virgin mary during o week that i'm going to jump their bones if they just blow in my ear when they're wasted. i HATE guys who blow in my ear.) but people are mostly really nice and easy to get along with, and you know there'll always been someone to wash you off and put you to bed if you're blind. plus i have had to work up a bit of independence - even thought my parents are still paying for everything at the moment, from my fees to my textbooks to my alcohol, it's a set allowance and i have to budget, and i do my own washing, keep my room cleanish, sometimes even get some work done.

ah, uni. that pesky thing that keep interrupting college. i have some awesome classes - english is so interesting, i've got some great people in my geopolitics tute, my american history lecturer is so good he's actually legendary - and some shit ones: all my french classes, i hate them, they're full of stunningly beautiful girls who are all totally fluent and really annoying guys who only think they are. plus i'm totally out of my depth, i shouldn't be doing advanced but it's too late to change now. hardly anyone in my history tute says anything, including me cause i never do the readings, and the tutor just sits there looking wryly amused and mildly exasperated. and my geopolitics lecturer, who is also my tutor, is a dry, soccer-mad Irish guy who's a hoot when he's not talking about geopolitics but the most boring man alive when he is. the lectures are two hours long on a monday afternoon, and lethal.
i leave all my assignments til the last minute - literally, i started the last two three hours before they were due and then sprinted to uni to get them in two minutes after the due time. hurrah! and i got my first ever lot of marks back last week - for an english debate (having written my speech at 3am the day it was due), 82. this is a mark i probably would have been less than thrilled with at school, but here it means a distinction that is only 2 marks off an HD. i thought to myself - this uni thing might not be quite as hard as it looks.

i'm sorry, this was meant to be a shortish entry. i'm going to stick some piccies in to break up all the text. but now you're all up to date, and i'll try to be a little more conscientious about this. (happy now, lukas?)
